Celebration! -by Joe

Awaiting tumor marker results and Oncology appointment
After 3 succesive chemotherapy failures in the past 6 months, Heidi's new liver tumors were growing as well as her bone and lung cancer progressing. Terrifying.  So 3 weeks ago her Oncologist resorted to the very toxic chemo called Taxotere.  Unlike Heidi's past chemotherapies, Taxotere is given once every 3 weeks instead of every week.

Great News!!
This Monday, 3 weeks after that first dose, Heidi's tumor markers were drawn and an hour or so later we met with her Oncologist.  The result? The tumor marker showed Taxotere was working, even after one dose!!  And her liver tests were moving back towards normal!

Because of the high toxicity of this chemo, Monday's dose was stopped when Heidi immediately developed a serious reaction to Taxotere as soon as the dose was started.  So they tried again Tuesday, going very slowly, adding other meds to reduce her body's negative reaction.  It worked and she got her complete second dose of Taxotere!

At the same time they were starting the second dose of Taxotere on Tuesday, I was seeing my own Oncologist for a followup after my cancer surgery on March 12.  Everything looked great he said, including my tumor marker(PSA)!  So I rejoined Heidi for her hours spent slowly receiving the Taxotere.

Celebration meal together with Mary at the SCCA Guest House
Heidi's dear friend Mary was also with Heidi in the chemotherapy room both days, giving wonderful support and encouragement.  Thank you Mary!  We celebrated with a meal together with Mary.

Back home now, we are both exhausted but so very thankful to God, to the staff at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and so many friends & family praying for us, sending positive thoughts our way.

So thank you!

Tough Times Ahead For Heidi - by Joe

Waiting to hear the tumor marker results
Yesterday's (April 2) tumor markers (labwork that tracks her cancer) confirmed that Heidi's adriamycin chemo has not worked and her cancer is growing.  So they stopped that chemo and told us to wait to hear what her Oncologist plans next.

Meanwhile I was having increasing pain from my surgery and my Oncologist ordered a CT scan yesterday, which showed the post cancer surgery drain was not working.

After the bad news, staying at the SCCA House

Today, I had outpatient surgery to place a deeper drain that will hopefully work better.  When we got home from my surgery, Heidi's Oncologist contacted us with thier plan: MRIs to establish a baseline of Heidi's current cancer status and then starting another chemotherapy called taxol.

Waiting for my outpatient surgery

As you can see from the photos, we pray, we laugh, we cry.  When I get scared about Heidi I remember the amazing hikes and climbs we've done since Spring of 2011 (almost 40!).  She's tough, she's determined and I plan on supporting her better and better as God shows me how.

No despair.  None.
Pray..  Laugh..  Cry..

Thank you for caring,
Joe

Heidi receiving her first dose of her new chemotherapy, adriamycin
 Tough times ahead..
A wonderful mystical hike on Valentine's Day

Since my last blog entry, our hopes for Heidi's new chemotherapy changed to disappointment when scans showed continued progression of her bone and liver tunors. She started weekly adriamycin this past Monday, a more toxic, more powerful chemo.

On the summit of challenging Jefferson Ridge on New Year's Day!

As with the chemo that failed, they'll have to wait 2 months to determine if this chemo is working via more scans and lab work.

My new prostate cancer is Stage 2 according to my biopsy, but during my upcoming surgery (radical prostatectomy) on March 12 they will check surrounding lymph nodes to make sure it is not Stage 3.

During the same procedure, they will go into my bladder, removing any new tumors found there.

So we have a lot to deal with. Prayer and support from family & friends are keeping us afloat these days. And humor.

Our easiest setting to pray remains on hikes in the two magnificent mountain ranges nearby. We have already done 5 hikes this year! What a contrast between a day at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and a day on a hiking trail.

Enjoying a beautiful creek below this beautiful wooden bridge

We need both.

We are grateful for both.
We are grateful for you.

Heading up a ridge to reach a beautiful river gorge

As always, thank you for your prayers and/or positive thoughts.. your compassion.

Love & Blessings,
Joe & Heidi

The Good News Bad News Roller Coaster Ride - by Joe

Posted by Cancer Care on Tuesday, January 17, 2012

We are sitting in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance cafe as I write this.  We are both adjusting to both good news and bad news today.

Waiting for my ultrasound & biopsy procedures.
The good news is that the specialist Orthopedic Surgeon that handles bone cancer cases wants Heidi to stay fully active.  He has the most expertise in this area and told us that the new hip/femur tumors are not a danger for fracture at this point.  Not even worth doing radiation.  Hopefully Heidi's new chemotherapy will stop them completely at this stage.

The bad news is that in addition to my recurrent bladder cancer, my biopsy report just came back positive for Stage 2 prostate cancer.  Whatever treatment I get for it has to wait 8-10 weeks because of typical post-biopsy bleeding.

Meanwhile, we have a long list of planned hikes/climbs for this year and will continue to worship God in high places as long as we can. And in the kayak, the garden, at church.. everywhere. God's Love is as present as ever in our lives. More, actually.

Thank you for caring!

Joe (& Heidi)

Exercise And Prostate Cancer Risk

Posted by Cancer Care on Wednesday, December 29, 2010

More and more research is showing that many cases of cancer can be prevented by lifestyle and dietary changes. (More enthusiastic about cancer prevention experts have suggested that 80 percent of cancer cases, or more, perhaps avoidable lifestyle changes in diet and rigorous.) Given that, ideally, a modern treatment of the results of cancer long-term survival of only about 60 percent of all cancer patients, and that the rate of survival for many of the most dangerous cancer is still much more sinister, an ounce of cancer prevention is definitely worth a lot most of the nail of cancer cure.Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer, which occurs in men, and the second most common cause of cancer death for men. In 2009, approximately 192,000 new cases of prostate cancer is diagnosed, and about 27,000 men die from this disease.

Prostate cancer is currently suffering from one in every six American men during their lifetime, accounting for 25 percent of all diagnosed cancer in men (similar, I might add that the rate of breast cancer of all cancers diagnosed in women).

The relationship between prostate cancer risk and the exercise was not entirely clear, to date, several clinical studies have produced conflicting results. Some of these studies have suggested that high levels of daily physical activity can reduce the risk of prostate cancer, while other studies have not confirmed the link between prostate cancer risk and physical levels. A prospective study of the new public health activity, just published in the British Journal of Cancer, adds another important evidence that increased levels of physical activity may reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Importantly, the researchers conducting this study has taken the additional step of conducting evaluations of the seven days of physical activity to ensure that study participants who actually engaged in physical activity levels that were asked in questionnaires . (This validation step confirmed the accuracy of information provided by volunteers of the study questionnaire.

When the men involved in sports at the highest level than at lower levels, some important differences in the risk of prostate cancer occurred. In general, very high physical activity associated with a 16 percent reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer. Furthermore, men who had spent at least half the days were physically active, the risk of prostate cancer was 20 percent lower than that of men, who spent much of their workday sitting. In addition, the risk of developing advanced prostate cancer still seems to relieve the regular daily physical activity overall results of this study mirrored other studies of high-quality cancer prevention in other cancers (including, in particular, breast cancer) . Cancer is the second leading cause of premature death, when the people of all ages, and the leading cause of premature death in children under 80 years in the United States. Regular exercise, such as relatively moderate, such as brisk walking or cycling, has been shown to reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and, increasingly, the risk of developing or dying from various cancers.

Incidence of prostate cancer, and mortality associated with prostate cancer, these 45 887 middle-aged men and elderly people were analyzed by the end of a large prospective epidemiological study.

4 Effective Testing For Prostate Cancer

Posted by Cancer Care on Sunday, December 26, 2010

Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It affects about 35,000 people each year, approximately 66% of those diagnosed are men who are over 50 years of age. It begins with the prostate cells begin to proliferate uncontrollably, leading to the formation of cancerous tumors. This can then lead to many undesirable symptoms such as urinating properly, and pelvic pain in the groin and lower back. If you suspect you may have prostate cancer the above reasons, or for any other reason, you should go see your doctor for further testing. In this article I will discuss the four tests that can be used.

1)-specific antigen protein (PSA) TEST: Your prostate produces a protein called PSA. A PSA test measures only the level of PSA that is in your blood. A small amount of PSA is normal, but high levels of PSA blood is often associated with prostate cancer. PSA testing is not 100% accurate, because other factors such as your age can affect PSA levels.

2) Check digital rectal examination (DRE): This test, prostate cancer, the doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum. Then feel your prostate to see if it has changed shape or increase the size. ERD also has its limitations because prostate cancer can still feel normal from the outside.

3) transrectal ultrasound (TRUS): This test uses sound waves to construct an image of your prostate. Your doctor may then use that image to measure your prostate and see if it seems abnormal. Again ETR is not the test for prostate cancer because a perfectly normal size, normal prostate-form may yet prove to be cancer.

4) Biopsy: This test involves a biopsy of the prostate and examined in the laboratory. Laboratory samples can then be used to determine if the cells of prostate cancer. Although biopsy is one of the best tests available for prostate cancer, there are cases where a prostate biopsy is negative, despite the return of the cancer cells are present.

Executives of the prostate 35,000 men each year. Therefore, if you have reason to believe that you have contracted this disease and see your doctor and ask them to get tested. Although each test has its limitations, together they provide a good indicator of whether your prostate is cancerous.Whilst all intentions are made to make this article accurate and informative, it is designed for general information only. Prostate cancer is a very serious, potentially fatal and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

You Will Learn How Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy Works

Posted by Cancer Care on Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Prostate cancer is deadly to men over fifty years, and is often so slow to really develop that it is not noticed too late to remove by normal operation. Although prostate cancer can be prevented by normal routine examinations and a healthy lifestyle with low stress, it is always possible for a man to develop prostate cancer. For this reason, radiotherapy of prostate cancer, one of the most common ways to treat prostate cancer, and is effective for most. But it is not perfect. Before joining radiotherapy for prostate cancer, it is best to know how the treatment.

The alternative to surgery for prostate cancer

cancer treatment with radiotherapy of the prostate is also known as radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and is used when surgery fails, or at any stage of cancer. It works by sending a wave of ionized radioactive particles. This radiation is absorbed in the cells whose DNA mutation and increases the probability that the cell dies. There are two main types of prostate cancer with radiation beam and brachytherapy treatment. Radiation therapy is the most commonly used to treat prostate cancer surgery.Beam off therapy is performed by placing the patient in a linear accelerator to send beams shooting radioactive particles directly into the prostate. The latest techniques allow the beam to the shape of the prostate and other tissues are not damaged. In general, radiotherapy is performed in a period of several weeks every day. There are fewer side effects with the new forms of radiotherapy for prostate cancer, however.

Brachytherapy, however, is by infusion of a series of small bars with radiation and paste them into cancerous tissues. These measures serve a continuous discharge of radiation of low quality. X-rays are only able to travel a short distance, so there is little chance of damage to other surrounding tissues in the body. This treatment tends to have a better result in that the prevention of cancer recurrence. In addition, there are huge opportunities for radiation exposure of radiation men.Prostate other cancer is the most commonly used in people who would not really be able to undergo surgery safely. radiotherapy for prostate cancer is one of the most effective methods for treating prostate cancer, but there are side effects such as hair loss, illness and loss of overall prostate cancer energy. Although is a very deadly disease, it can be easily treated if caught in time with regular reviews and a healthy lifestyle.

Prostate Cancer Is The Amazing System DaVinci

Posted by Cancer Care on Sunday, December 19, 2010

Unlike normal blog posting dealing with the choices, ethics and the impact on my professional motivational speaker has been considered appropriate today to speak of my complete recovery from prostate cancer, hoping it will help others who face decisions about prostate cancer treatment. In layman's view, everything seemed to work fine. So the discovery of prostate cancer was quite accidental. My doctor told me to a urologist. Because they are afraid of needles (and a final biopsy needle) I asked if it hurt. Prostate Cancer! How could I, 47 years old, healthy man who has no other medical problems have prostate cancer? My local doctor wanted to schedule surgery immediately. He said he had four options: (1) prostotectemy radical (open surgery), (2) Radiation (3) Hormone therapy and / or (4) Watch and wait. Again, he recommended surgery. I'd like to learn to play golf - I would like to learn from someone who plays every day to learn from a weekend hacker.

The first thing I found is based on my diagnosis, I had time to carefully consider my options. Prostate cancer is usually slow its progression. WARNING - Do not use a crutch to avoid treatment in my experience (I saw my father died-in-law from complications of prostate cancer), but to seek medical help to make treatment decisions.

Reflection:

Watch and wait. I researched my diet took the opportunity that I could reverse what existed and even reduce cancer. For a short time I actually saw a decline in my PSA, but it was short lived. Radiotherapy. Not really an option for me. As I talked with a man in his late 60s to early 70s who had excellent results using focused radiation (proton I think it was called), the reality is - when you choose radiation and tissue is destroyed, if prostate cancer returns can not be removed surgically. By the way information on proton therapy can be found at http://www.protons.com/ or http://www.llu.edu. com / high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). In my quest to find the right treatment, I spent a lot of time to consider this alternative.

Source ezinearticles.com

There were three practical objectives I wished to accomplish with this treatment, I choose: (1) eliminating cancer, (2) minimal issues with incontinence (preferably not) and (3) minimal issues with the function erectile (again, preferably none). Based on my Gleason score and diagnosis of prostate cancer, it seems that this treatment would be viable. Http://www.ushifu.com/ stay for Information Retrieval Through my salary, I met with Dr. George Suarez, medical director of USHifu. He reviewed my medical history and was kind enough to take the time to discuss my options with me using this treatment for prostate cancer news. Mr. Suarez had time to explain all my options and how if I elected, HIFU could be effective while meeting my three goals. Radical prostatectomy. All the possibilities above, brought me back to the original proposal - surgery.

Since I had time to investigate I discovered (through the miracle of the Internet) So here's a new procedure called robot-assisted prostate. Hum ... believes that more research is needed. Of course, at that time, the Johns Hopkins Brady Urological Institute, recognized as one of the world's leading prostate cancer research and cancer education. After careful consideration, I contacted Johns Hopkins asked a seemingly new procedure - using the Vinci Surgical System. http://www.urology.jhu.edu/MIS/daVinci/. the people of Johns Hopkins has not had a profit of care and tried with all my treatment options. Of course, reviewed my file carefully and spent all the time I wanted and needed to evaluate the options. In the end, one thing was clear - all other options remain the same - the surgical removal was still the "gold standard" of prostate cancer fight.

The surgery went well - of course, I do not remember anything - so I can rely on the doctor's report. Initial report showed that the cancer was contained within the prostate, and the withdrawal must give me "free of cancer." Result. In the four weeks following surgery I boarded a plane to Dallas, TX to start a new job. Within seven weeks of incontinence surgery was not an issue. Erecticle function returned within three months (with the aid of medication) and returned to full speed (without medication) within twelve months.

Staging System Of Prostate Cancer

Posted by Cancer Care on Saturday, December 11, 2010

Once a patient is diagnosed with prostate cancer, then it is important that information on the magnitude of the spread is determined, and how it affected gland. The determination of what is called the staging of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer staging is to classify the disease in the specific classification for the right approach for cancer staging classic treatment.Prostate was made by the classification of the stages in the phases A, B, C and D. Steps A and B be cured, and in both cases, the cancer is localized in the gland. In this type of staging prostate cancer, stage C cancer that spreads beyond the prostate but has not reached the lymph nodes. Some at this point any hope of being cured. In step D, the cancer has spread to lymph nodes, bones and other areas. Although prostate cancer at this stage can not be cured, it can treat the effects of the slowdown.

New staging systems for prostate cancer now use the TNM notation. T stands for tumor, N stands for lymph (lymph nodes) and M denotes other agency organs. For metastasis staging system for prostate cancer, T classification has two types: a) clinical stage and pathological stage b). . The clinical stage is important in determining whether the removal of the prostate gland may be in order, but shows the extent of spread of cancer. The pathologic stage is determined after surgery and show the extent of cancer - so you will be able to get a better idea of how he could in the organization of cancer future.Prostate systems, used, providing general guidance what to expect at each particular level. It describes the status of prostate cancer cells in it, the treatment can work for your particular stage, and prognosis of your case.

A staging system of prostate cancer has continued to be an effective tool and the basis of equal treatment and prognosis.

When the valuable information it provides, staging systems for cancer of the prostate is a useful tool for both patients and doctors. Patients may understand the current situation and the specific role of the prostate. Doctors can count on them to come up with an appropriate approach to the patient, are treating.Without prostate cancer staging systems, there would be no way intended for use by the level and severity of cancer, the patient experienced - does not refer to the most appropriate method to treat prostate cancer.

Sex After Prostate Cancer

Posted by Cancer Care on Tuesday, December 7, 2010

If you ever need a good reason to get a prostate cancer screening that is there. SEX, for many men, seems to define who we are as people. Therefore, the question of the possibility of having sex after being diagnosed with prostate cancer is interesting many. From a high level, there are four basic stages of prostate cancer in the previous it is diagnosed, options treatment are available and are less likely to have a negative impact on their sex life. The is diagnosed early, the better for his life, sexual life, and survival. Testing should begin when the typical man is about 50. Both tests include prostate specific antigen (PSA), a simple blood test and digital rectal exam or DRE.

This should be done every year for all men over 50 years of age, even if only to develop a reference number and history for future diagnostic informationIf But someone direct relatives, father, brother or uncle had cancer prostate, you should check and have the annual review starting about 40 years. This is also a good idea if you're black. There is some evidence that American blacks are at higher risk of developing prostate cancer, and should be reviewed from old. Most 40-50 years, men have no need to worry about prostate cancer, if these tests are conducted regularly as part of a year of physical work-up. This is because, as cancers go, prostate cancer is relatively slow growing. Make no mistake however, cancer is the second most common cause of death after heart disease in men. And prostate cancer is the second most common cancer decreased men. This type of information should be disgusting to you, if you are a man or know and love the man.

It's the best you can do to ensure a healthy sex life and long-lived.

The second cause of death in cancer is highly curable prostate cancer. Why? Well, men have a tendency to ignore their health much more than women. Waiting until prostate cancer is nearing its end, or metastasizes is almost a process wish. The death diagnosis for prostate cancer is the PSA test followed by a biopsy if deemed necessary. After analyzing the biopsy Gleason score and is tied. Many factors are involved in the decision to treat or even have a prostate. Your age, interest in the results of sex, medical and family history and tests are used by all of you and your doctor determine the correct option action.Prostate cancer does not mean the end of your sex life. It means that you have a cancer that must be carefully monitored and treated appropriately. Having prostate cancer does not stop a healthy sex life. Dying, however, do not! Then, ask your doctor and schedule a blood test and an examination of the prostate.

Diet, Herbs, and Prostate Cancer

Posted by Cancer Care on Saturday, November 20, 2010

There are multiple problems that can develop in the prostate in older men. These include benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH) and prostate cancer (CaP). Saw Palmetto, derived from the American dwarf pine tree, is effective at treating early BPH. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydro-testosterone and therefore leads to shrinkage of the prostate. Stinging nettle, which inhibits the growth of prostate cells, is commonly added to saw palmetto in Europe to treat early BPH.Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men with approximately 230,000 new cases annually. Prostate cancer risk is affected by male hormones as well diet. Men in the orient have a very low risk of prostate cancer, while men in Western Europe and United States have a high risk of prostate cancer. Furthermore, when men in the Orient eat a Western diet their risk of prostate cancer increases. The typical American diet high in animal meat, cured meats, animal fats, and milk increases the risk of prostate cancer. This type of diet not only leads to CaP but also to other cancers, heart disease and strokes.Diets high in vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids are the best way to prevent prostate cancer. In the orient, it is thought that the high soy content contributes to the low incidence of prostate cancer.Fish and omega-3 fatty acids (olive oil) are associated with a decreased risk of CaP. Olive oil has been shown to directly inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells. Flaxseed another omega-3 fatty acid also has phyto-estrogen activity. In a study by Duke University, flaxseed was found to inhibit CaP cells in men who were undergoing prostatectomy.Saw Palmetto may help to prevent CaP by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydro-testosterone. Its anti-inflammatory effect further inhibits cancer formation.Stinging Nettle has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cells and prostate cancer cells both in the laboratory and in mice. Further human studies are needed.Green Tea (polyphenols and isoflavones) has multiple effects including anti-oxidant, anti- proliferative, anti-angiogenesis, and encourages natural cell death (apoptosis). There are strong data in the orient for its use in preventing prostate cancer.Lycopene (tomatoes) is a powerful anti-oxidant and therefore prevents damage to the prostate from oxygen radicals. It has many activities including inhibition of prostate cancer as well as other cancers. Higher blood concentrations of selenium correlate with a decreased risk of prostate cancer.Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts) contain sulforaphane and indole-3 carbinol. These substances induce enzymes in the GI tract to break down cancer causing substances. They are also excellent anti-oxidants.Pumpkin seeds contain zinc and are thought to help with BPH. Zinc in small amounts appears to protect against prostate cancer but high amounts of zinc (100mg/day) may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment Prostate Cancer

Posted by Cancer Care on Wednesday, November 17, 2010

We know that starting at age 40, the levels of the by-product prolactin of testosterone of men increases, stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT triggering prostate enlargement and Prostate cancer. Therefore in order to prevent the symptoms of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer are to naturally impend the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Unfortunately, aging is not the only causes of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. In this article, we will discuss other causes of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.
I. Causes of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer
1. Genetics
Genetics may also play a role in enlarged prostate since study shows that prostate cancer and enlarged prostates can be inherited from generation to generation.
2. Hormone imbalance
The outward appearance of a typical middle-aged person shows increased abdominal fat and shrinkage of muscle mass, which is the main factor causing hormone imbalance. Hormone imbalance is also caused by depression, stress, and anxiety that are the most common psychological complications of hormone imbalance.
3. Cell-growth factor
For whatever reason, some people have implicated in enlarged prostate that is a growth factor.
4. Mineral deficiency
Our prostate contains high amounts of zinc to function normally. Zinc deficiency causes the prostate to enlarge. This may be due to aging or uncontrolled diet with excessive alcohol drinking.
5. Obesity
Study shows that uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fats are the main cause of hormone imbalance that results in prostate enlargement. Researchers suggest that excess calorie consumption could somehow directly stimulate prostate enlargement because the excess body fat that accumulates causes an imbalance of hormone levels.
6. Testosterone
Testosterone deficiency may be caused by high amounts of the by-product prolactin of testosterone of men in the body that stimulates even higher productions of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase resulting in a high amount of the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT thus triggering prostate enlargement. Excess estrogen seems to be the culprit in prostate enlargement that leads to the pathology and favors the development of prostate cancer.
III. Symptoms
1. Nocturia.
Nocturia is defined as being awakened at night one or more times in order to pass urine. It becomes more common as the person becomes older. This common pattern seen among people with this condition is an increased number of times of waking up every night to urinate for the rest of their life.
Nocturnal Polyuria is an important cause of nocturia in which there is an overproduction of urine at night. It is defined to have nighttime urine volume that is greater than 20-30% of the total 24 hour urine volume. Nocturia occurs more commonly among older people. It also occurs in women and men differently. Women generally experience nocturia as a result from childbirth, menopause, and pelvic organ prolapse. Nocturia in men can be directly attributed to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.
2. Dysuria.
Dysuria is a complication associated with genitourinary infections usually resulting in painful urination because the infection has made its way into the urinary tract, resulting in a urinary tract infection. Dysuria in men is usually indicative of a complication of the prostate, commonly referred to as prostatic hyperplasia caused by hormonal imbalances associated with estrogen production.
3. Asymptomatic
As we know the prostate gland becomes enlarged as a man ages. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis may be diagnosed when infection-fighting cells are present causing common symptoms of prostatitis such as difficulty with urination, fever, and lower back and pelvic pain.
4. Epididymitis
Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis that connects the testicle with the vas deferens. Epididymitis is usually caused by infection of the urethra or the bladder. Epididymitis may begin with a low grade fever and chills with a heavy sensation in the testicle which becomes increasingly sensitive to pressure or traction.
III. Prevention and treatment
A. With Foods
1. Tomato
Tomatoes contain a high amount of lycopene that can help to protect the prostate and keep it healthy, but raw tomato is hard to digest. Be sure to take tomato with dark green leafy vegetables for helping the absorption of lycopene.
2. Soy bean and legume
Soybeans and legumes contains isoflavones and is a unique source of phytochemicals It directly inhibits the growth of different types of cancer cells and protects the prostate from being enlarged. Study shows that isoflavones were found to markedly inhibit prostate tumors in mice implanted with prostate cancer cells. Try adding soy or rice milk to your morning cereal or oatmeal.
2. Grapefruit
Grapefruits contain high amounts of vitamin C, minerals, bioflavonnoids and other plant chemicals that help to prevent enlarged prostate, prostate cancer and other forms of cancer and heart diseases.
3. Papaya
Papayas are rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, carotenoids and flavonoids that have cardio protective and anti-cancer effects. Eating papayas help to promote lung health and prevents the prostate from becoming enlarged and prevents prostate cancer.
4. Bean
Beans are rich in inositol pentakisphosphate. Beans are high in fiber, which helps the body rid itself of excess testosterone that reduces the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT thus triggering prostate enlargement and other problems.
5. Green tea
Green tea contains the antioxidant phytochemicals called polyphenols that attack growth factors and proteins, interrupting processes that increase the size of tumors, thus preventing them from spreading to other parts of the body. Green tea also help to prevent the development of benign prostate hyperplasia such as enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.
6. Broccoli
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, including kale and cauliflower, are rich in sulphoraphane, a cancer-fighting phytochemical that helps rid the body of excess testosterone and reduces the risk of benign protatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
7. Cold water fish
Cold water fish contains high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. Study shows that omega-3 fatty acids inhibit carcinogenesis that helps significantly lower levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in men with benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
B. With Supplements
1. Bee pollen
Bee pollen is an antioxidant containing high amounts of flavonoids, zinc and many other elements needed by our bodies. It has an astounding record at reversing prostate cancer and other prostate problems such as enlarged prostate.
2. Prostate glandulars
Animal prostates contain high amounts of zinc that nourishes the human prostate.
3. Alanine
Since alanine is present in prostate fluid, it plays an important role in prostate health. This has been confirmed in some studies that Alanine helps in preventing enlarged prostate and helps in strengthening the immune system.
4. Glutamics acid
The fluid produced by the prostate gland also contains high amounts of glutamic acid, and may play a role in the normal function of the prostate. High dosages of glutamic acid may cause headaches and neurological problems and people with kidney or liver disease should not consume high intakes of amino acids without first consulting with your doctor.
5. Glycine
Glycine is also found in fairly large amounts in the prostate fluid and may for this reason be important in prostate health. It is required to build proteins in the body and synthesis of nucleic acids, the construction of RNA as well as DNA, bile acids and other amino acids in the body. Study shows that glycine, taken withalanine and glutamic acid help to reduced the amount of swelling in the prostate tissue.
6. Lycopene
The substance found in tomatoes, fruits and vegetables can prevent and slow down prostate inflammation and prostate cancer. Study shows that lycopene helps to decrease in DNA the damage to prostate cells. Lycopene also protects against LDL cholesterol oxidation.
C. With Herbs
1. Saw palmetto
Saw palmetto is the number one choice when it comes to prostate health. Recent study of American Society for Cell Biology shows that saw palmetto inhibited prostate cancer cell growth in the test tube. It has been used for a long time as an herb to treat an enlarged prostate gland in men. It may also be used to treat prostate cancer. This herbal remedy has no significant side effects and only rarely causes mild stomach upset or diarrhea.
2. American Ginseng
The roots, has been used for centuries in Asian medicine as an aphrodisiac, a tonic for well being and a curative. American Ginseng is helpful in treating prostate problems due to low testosterone and androgen levels. It also inhibits cancer cells proliferation in a variety of cancer such as lung cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer.
3. Corn silk

Gui Zhi is used for urinary tract disorder that pertains to ying qi levels which is the main cause of prostate inflammation. It also is used as a tonic and blood purifier.
7. Astragalus root
Astragalus root is a sprawling perennial legume. The Chinese medicine uses the dried sliced or powdered root of the plant to enhance immune function by increasing the activity of certain white blood cells, which increases the production of antibodies. It also helps to increase the body's resistance to infections, to heal the allergies, and to raise and renew the vitality.
8. Che Qian zi (plantago seed)
It is mainly used for stone strangury caused by lower burner damp-heat, such as the symptoms of aching pain in the lumbus and abdomen, poor urination or with hematuria, and urinary tract stones.
9. Vaccaria seed
It is used to reduce pain and stiffness in the lower back, drain excessive damp heat, invigorate blood and treat difficult urination.
E. With Vitamins & Minerals
As we mentioned in previous articles, We know that starting at age 40, the levels of by-product prolactin of testosterone of men increases, stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT triggering prostate enlargement and other problems. Besides aging there are many other causes of enlarged prostate and some of them might result in prostate cancer. Beside foods nutrition and herbs, vitamins and minerals also play an important role in preventing and treating prostate enlarged as well as prostate cancer.
1. Zinc
Zinc is necessary for male sexual and prostate health. Zinc inhibits the uptake of testosterone into prolactin. The prostate gland contains a higher concentration of zinc than any other organ in the body, therefore zinc deficiency is the major cause of enlarged prostate as well as an early indication of prostate cancer.
2. Selenium
Selenium contains an antioxidant enzyme that helps to enhance immune function, stop early cancer cells in their development and control cell damage that may lead to cancer. Foods that contain high levels of selenium are bran, broccoli, eggs, mushroom, and basil nut.
3. Vitamin C
As we know Vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin, is commonly known as an antioxidant. Some studies show that increased levels of vitamin C reduce the risk for prostate cancer as well as prostate inflammation and enlarged prostate.
4. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is found in foods and is also produced by the body and activated after exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. Studies show that activated vitamin D may be broken down in the prostate, where it may plays an important role in preventing enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of prostate cancer.
5. Vitamin E
Vitamin E plays an important role in preventing prostate cancer because it interferes with prostate specific antigen (PSA) and androgen receptor proteins that play a central role in the development of the disease.
F. With Homeopathic Remedies
1.Chimaphilia
Chimpaphilia acts principally on kidneys, and genito-urinary tract; affects also lymphatic and mesenteric glands. It helps in treating urge to urinate with burn pain, strain to urinate and prostate enlargement and irritation.

Conium maculatum is an excellent remedy for old age people. It helps to improve prostate enlargement, difficult urination, weakened urine flow and soften the prostate and enhance sexuality.
3. Hepar sulphuris calcareum
Hepar sulphuris calcareum is a mixture powder of oyster shells and pure flower of sulfur. You can purchase in mixture in a health food store and follow the instructions to make your own. Hepar sulphuris calcareum has proven record in treating dribbling urine and poor flow.
4. Sabal serrulata
Sabal serrulata is homeopathic to irritability of the genito-urinary organs. It is helpful in treating difficult urination caused by enlarged prostate, constant desire to urinate, as well as sexual inability.
5. Staphysagria
Staphysagria is helpful in treating diseases of the genito-urinary tract such as the urge to urinate, inability to urinate fully and feeling of bladder not being empty.
6. Thuja
The main action of thuja is on the genito-urinary organs. It is helpful in treating enlarged prostate, sudden desire to urinate and split urinary stream.
G. With Common Sense Approaches
1. Reduce fat and cholesterol intake, especially saturated fats.
Study shows that if you eat more than 5 servings of red meat every week you could increase the risk of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer by 80%. By eating less of red meat and replacing them with cold water fish, you are ensured yourselves to get enough omega fatty acid that helps to improve your prostate health, reduce cholesterol levels, lower the risk of enlarged prostate as well as prostate cancer.
2. Eat foods containing more zinc (nuts- especially walnuts, pumpkin, seeds, safflower seeds and oysters). Zinc is an essential mineral for prostate health. It helps to reduce the size of the prostate and relieve symptoms of enlarged prostate. Foods containing zinc also contain cucurbitacines, chemicals that stop testosterone from changing to stronger forms of testosterone which encourages too many prostate cells to grow. Foods that contain cucurbitacines are nuts, walnuts, pumpkin seed, and oyster.
3. Guard your prostate with green tea
Green tea contains catechins, a chemical that helps our immune system to track down tumor cells before they can do any harm to the prostate cells. Green tea may be one reason that Asian people have far fewer cases of prostate cancer than North Americans.
4. Remove all chemicals and pesticides from diet (eat organic food).
Chemicals and pesticides in the processing food is toxic to our body. Intaking high doses of these poisonous chemicals will danger our immune system as well as cause inflammation of the body including the prostate.
5. Increase consumption of plants high in the sulphurophanes
Study shows that you could reduce the risk of prostate cancer and prostate enlargement by 45% if you eat 24 or more servings of vegetables that contain high amounts of sulphurophanes such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and cabbage.
H. Activities That Help to Maintain a Healthy Prostate
1. Moderate exercise (like walking)
We know that one half to three-quarters of men older than 75 will have some cancerous changes in their prostate glands. People doing moderate exercise like walking for 2 to 3 hours per week had a 25 percent less risk of developing prostate problems than those who did not. Just 20-30 minutes walking a day would help to increase circulation of blood to the body as a side benefit for better sexual function and prostate health.
2. Sitz baths
It is one of the earliest prostate treatments and the most effective remedies for prostate pain. This special bath brings a great flow of blood to a specific area of the body while the regular hot bath is pleasant and generally increases circulation throughout your body.
3. Yoga
Yoga is really helpful to the prostate. It also helps tone the deep pelvic muscles there by promoting circulation. Yoga promotes flexibility, circulation, and stimulates the liver meridian. In general yoga helps a person to be more aware of his pelvic area in terms of his muscular control.
4. Kegal exercise
Kegal exercise when performed while in virasana, bhekasana or frog pose also promotes good prostate health and overall benefit to the urogenital tract.
5. Spinal and pelvic massage
Spinal and pelvis massage helps to
  • Increase blood supply to the prostate and the pelvic area.
  • Increase lymphatic flow to the prostate and the pelvic area.
  • Reduces inflammatory conditions.
6. Joyful sex life
Sex helps increase movement of the pelvic muscles and the blood circulation to all organs of your body. As fresh blood supply arrives your cells, organs and muscles are saturated with fresh oxygen and hormones, and as the used blood is removed, you also remove waste products and toxins from your body, thus reducing the risk of inflammation of the prostate.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

Posted by Cancer Care on Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of death among men in America. This cancer begins in the prostate gland (the walnut shaped gland that produces seminal fluid). Traditional cancer treatment options vary depending on the stage.T2 or T3 cancer is called metastatic prostate cancer. Prostate cancer treatment options also include diet change options. A high fat diet has been scientifically proven to be associated with a higher risk of this form of cancer; because of this it is recommended that men diagnosed with early or advanced cancer change their diet to a low-fat diet. Lycopene has been seen to the effect in cancer treatments and especially in Metastatic prostate cancer treatment. Vitamin E and vitamin C are also a recommended natural treatment. Overall optimum physical health should be addressed when battling against the prognosis of any form of prostate cancer and proper diet and key diet changes can be very effective in producing optimum health.Emotional health is just as essential as physical health and patients receiving treatment must achieve optimum emotional health. Physicians are recommending that patients receive all of the tools necessary to obtain optimal physical health while receiving prostate cancer treatment and laughter, stress free life style changes and dietary changes are beneficial additives to traditional radiation treatments.

Device external radiation treatment
Example of an ultrasound affected by prostate cancer (ultrasound can be used to guide a biopsy). Cancer develops from the tissues of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system when cells will mutate to spread so uncontrollably. These can spread (metastasize is) in migrating from the prostate to other parts of the body (especially bones and lymph nodes).Prostate cancer occurs regardless of benign prostatic hypertrophy (or prostate adenoma). Prostate cancer can cause pain, difficulty urinating, erectile dysfunction and other symptoms. Treatment is by surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and sometimes chemotherapy, or combination of these methods.
Frequency
The rate of breast cancer varies widely throughout the world. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is rare among Asians and more prevalent among blacks (high rates may also be influenced by the increased effort detection).Prostate cancer develops most often in men over fifty years. This is the type of cancer most common in men, where he is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer (except lung cancer). However, many men who develop prostate cancer symptoms do not, do not undergo any therapy and die for other reasons. We find outbreaks of cancer cells in 30 to 70% of cases in studies performed in autopsies of men 70 to 80 years; prostate cancer remains the most often asymptomatic: the probability of a man 50 years know a diagnosis of prostate cancer is only 10%. In 3% of cases, this cancer will be fatal.
Geography of Prostate Cancer
From 1983-2002, while deaths from cancer were generally higher in the Caribbean city, deaths from prostate cancer and stomach were twice as common in the Caribbean in the mainland (while colorectal cancer and lung cancer were three times less frequent). In most cases, prostate cancer is asymptomatic, ie it is discovered when it does not own event to it. The PSA is a protein normally secreted by prostate cells, but cancer cells secrete 10 times more than a normal cell. The blood level of PSA can be increased by many other factors (the prostate volume, infections and / or inflammation, the mechanical (digital rectal other)...) or decreased by certain treatments for benign hypertrophy (ministered). Some authors have proposed to bring the rate to its actual weight of the prostate, or assess the free PSA / total PSA, or the kinetic growth rate over 2 years. Scorer still uncertain for screening, the PSA level is, however, a key indicator for monitoring and treatment of cancers reported.During a rectal examination, conducted as systematic or because of symptoms related to another illness (especially benign prostatic hypertrophy) incidentally, on parts of resection of the prostate during surgical treatment of prostate adenoma. When it is symptomatic prostate cancer is most often at an advanced stage.
Diagnosis
The diagnostic orientation based on two key elements: the digital rectal examination and determination of PSA blood. The abnormality of one or both leaves suspect prostate cancer. It will be confirmed or not, by taking a sample of the prostate (biopsy) for examination under a microscope. Only the positivity of these biopsies permits to plan and begin treatment of this cancer. Once confirmed the diagnosis of prostate cancer, we conduct a bone scan in search of bone metastases and abdomino-pelvic CT or MRI abdomino-pelvic to clarify the extension of the tumor in the prostate and houses of possible pelvic lymph node metastases, retroperitoneal or liver.
Clinique
Clinical examination is the fundamental digital rectal exam.
Ultrasound trans-rectal biopsies
It shall, however, when its interest is used to guide prostate biopsies.
Technique
An endorectal ultrasound probe equipped with a guide needle is inserted into the rectum. Biopsies were performed with needles fitted with a notched mandrel. The screen of the ultrasound, with a landmark representing the path of the needle, permits, thus firing biopsy very precise.
Preparation and conduct
Many centers now offer systematic antibiotic (short antibiotic treatment to reduce infectious complications).
Tolerance
The inconvenience of this review may justify the use of local or general anesthesia. Local anesthesia with a gel anesthetic (lidocaine gel) has never demonstrated its effectiveness. Local anesthesia by injection of lidocaine on each side of the prostate (nerves pudendaux) has shown in many studies improved tolerance of the examination, however incomplete, because of its low efficiency discomfort associated with the presence of the probe. General anesthesia "classic" is rarely used, reserved for patients who have suffered greatly during the first of a series of prostate biopsies.
Anatomopathologie
Cancer begins peripheral portion of the gland, unlike benign prostatic hypertrophy of interest to the central area, périurétrale.
Bilan extension
The spread of the disease when the disease must be determined in order to better tailor therapy. Therefore the presence of bone metastases, lung and liver, knowing that bone metastases are most frequent. it must finally try to clarify the extension of the tumor in the prostate, particularly whether the latter exceeds the prostate capsule or not.The means of imaging used in routine generally low ability to show (ultrasound scan, MRI) or to precisely locate (scan) the original prostate lesions, owing to the low blood of breast cancer. MRI scanners or new generation (volume) are used to search the achievement of lymph nodes, but only nodes whose size is increased are detected. New products in contrast MRI, so-called "super-para-magnetic" could improve the detection of lymph nodes affected. The positron emission tomography (PET camera, PET-scan) did not indicate however, because of very little or no hypermetabolism prostate cancer.
Treatment
The age, overall health of humans as well as the extent of spread, appearance under the microscope and the response of cancer to initial treatment are important to predict the outcome of the disease. As prostate cancer is a disease of elderly men, many will die for other reasons before the prostate cancer could spread or cause symptoms. Decide whether or not we treat localized cancer of the prostate (a tumor confined within the prostate) with intent to heal is that arbitration must be made between the positive and negative expected to point of view of patient survival and quality of life. The treatment should be discussed on a case by case basis following the extension of cancer, the patient's general condition and related diseases.
Medical treatment
Hormone
A blocking or greatly reducing the production of this hormone can effectively curb the disease. The overall control of the disease, adding radiotherapy and hormone therapy for 3 years, can improve significantly the number of patients for whom the disease remains undetectable.
Chemotherapy
Until the early 2000s, the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy in metastatic prostate cancer, and whose usual treatment hormonotherapy by becoming ineffective (tried in particular on increasing PSA despite repeated androgen suppression) 's has proved a failure.
Surgery
It involves the removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles and may be preceded by a levy of lymph drainage of the prostate. The surgery can be done through open (surgical incision in the abdomen or at the perineum) or by abdominal Coelioscopy; surgery is reserved for cancer localized to the prostate and offers great chance of cure if the cancer is actually located and slightly or moderately aggressive (aggressiveness estimated by the Gleason score), and may lead to urinary incontinence, most often temporary and erectile dysfunction. Currently, there is no superiority of one technique over another with regard to cancer outcomes and results urinary and sexual function.
Coelioscopy
Cryoablation
The prostate cancer tissue may be destroyed by local application of a very cold gas.
